1929 Ford Model A Cabriolet
Model A Puts Ford Back in Drivers Seat
Declining sales, profits and prestige caused Ford to abandon the Model T in
1927 for the Model A. Although the public was curious (over 25 million
people visited Ford showrooms just to see the new style), sales in 1928 were
still poor, hampered by production problems. With very little restyling
(convertibles now had outside door handles), 1929 became Ford’s last
dominant year. Sales double to over 1.5 million as Ford wrestled the #1
position from Chevrolet and had a 32% market share, bringing smiles to
everyone in Dearborn, from President Edsel Ford on down.
Precision Engineered to Ford
Specifications
The 2 millionth Model A built was a cigarette cream Cabriolet identical to
this 1:32 scale precision die-cast replica. From the outside door handles to
the 4-cylinder 40 horsepower engine and outside luggage compartment, the
Cabriolet looks just like the ones that cruised America’s roads 75 years
ago. Our companion piece, the 1929 Ford Flatbed Pick-Up, started as one of
the 130,608 chassis produced that year. These chassis were perfect for light
weight trucks since they were built like cars and handled much better than
the heavier trucks, yet still provided ample room on its flatbed for
hauling.
