When Dodge decided to get back into racing, they called upon an old teammate, Richard Petty. "The King" and 7-time champion, had retired from driving, but his new Dodge will be in the capable hands of John Andretti, a race winner in his own right. With 2 Top-Ten finishes already, John Andretti plans to be the first to put a new Dodge in Victory Lane.
John Andretti is one of auto racing's most versatile drivers, competing everywhere from Indy Cars to Fuel Dragsters, but he has chosen stock cars as his principal venue. The Andretti name has become one of the world's most well known in all of motorsports, from the Indy Car success of Mario Andretti and John's cousin Michael. It almost seems natural that John would drive for the greatest name in stock car racing: Richard Petty. John joked with his boss: "Stick with me, King. I'll make you famous!"
Dodge is a legendary name in stock car racing. Until now, a past legend. Bringing a car back that has not seen official factory action for over twenty-two years is no mean feat, and the Dodge Test Team really did it. A 1971 NASCAR Dodge weighted 3700 pounds, and had a 426 cubic inch V* Hemi engine producing 550 horsepower to run 200 mph. A 2001 NASCAR Dodge will weigh 3400 pounds, and has a 358 cubic inch V8 engine producing 800+ horsepower to run 200 mph. This new Dodge Intrepid R/T has low wind drag and aero numbers that beat even the swoopy, high-wing 1970 Dodge Daytona.
The Petty family has always enjoyed a close relationship with the marque. From 1972 to 1977, King Richard earned 45 of his 200 race wins, and three of his seven NASCAR Championships while driving a Dodge. At Martinsville in 1999, Petty enterprises scored an historic NASCAR double win: the Cup event on Sunday, and victory in the Craftsman truck race the day before with a #43 Dodge. John Andretti and Crew Chief Greg Steadman intend to put their own new #43 Dodge in Victory Lane again soon.
Model has Cheerios Bright Colors swooping around streamlined dodge Intrepid R/T bodywork; including the latest aerodynamic enhancements like roof and cowl flaps, rear window and roof rails, hood retainers, rear deck lid spoiler, vented front air dam, side skirt extensions and jack posts. The hood opens to real a complete engine assembly.
