Joseph A. Fournier Dies At Age Of 72
Joseph A. Fournier, 72, a local retired business man, residing at 345 Main street, Saco, for 10 years, died at a local hospital Sunday afternoon after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Ste. Louise county of L'Islet, P. Q.,the son of Francois and Marie (Belanger) Fournier. He once operated a grocery store at Smith corner, Elm street. Later he founded and conducted the Biddeford and Saco Paper company, Elm street, for many years, prior to disposing of it and retiring about 10 years ago. He resided here most of his life.
He was one of the founders of the Voltigeur Snowshoe club of this city and was active in the organization for over 25 years. He served as a former president of both the American and Canadian Snowshoe unions. He was ,a member of Biddeford-Saco lodge of Elks, Council Chagnon, Union St. Jean Baptiste society, and the Sacred Heart League of Notre Dame de Lourdes church. Saco. He was a regular communicant of that parish.
Besides his widow, the former Bertha Ourette, he leaves a stepson, Adelard Chretien; a son, Laurent Fournier, Saco; two daughters, Mrs. Amanda Fournier, Saco, Mrs. Yvette Octeau, Esmond, P. Q.; a brother, Louis Fournier, Saco; several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Emond funeral home, Hill street, prior to services to be held at Notre Dame de Lourdes church, Saco, Thursday morning at 8.

JOSEPH FOURNIER
Funeral services for Joseph Fournier were held this morning from Notre Dame de Lourdes church. Saco. with Rev. Albert Charette. pastor, officiating at a solemn requiem high mass assisted by Rev. Paul Jalbert as deacon and Rev. Joseph Allard as sub-deacon. Singing was by a group of choir members with Mrs. Eva Carrier at the organ.
Bearers were Richard Doherty, Robert Croteau, Harry Courtois. Robert Andre, Conrad Leclair and Rene Dubois.
Delegations were present from Union St. John Baptist, the Sacred Heart league of Notre Dame church, and the American Snowshoe Union, including Raymond G. Levesque. secretary, and Armand Dutil, director of sports.
Burial was in the family lot at St. Joseph cemetery with Father Jalbert saying prayers at the grave.
Attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Laurent Fournier and Mrs. Rene Octeau, Providence. R. I.
A delegation of members of Biddeford-Saco lodge of Elks visited the Emond funeral home, Wednesday evening, to pay their respects to Mr. Fournier, a member of the lodge, and to conduct ritualistic memorial services led by M. Arthur Costellow, exalted ruler of the lodge.

He was also a former President of the American and Canadian Snowshoe Union.
