General Notes:
Ambroise Haydel, (originally Heidel) native of Neukirchen, Electorate of Mainz and a baker came to Louisiana on Les Deux Freres leaving Lorent France sometime after 17 Nov 1720 when the ship was commissioned. The ship under command of Pierre Chesneau had, in addition of the 51 crew members, 150 Germans and 77 Swiss passengers. Among these were Ambrose' brother, Johann and his sister Barbe and Catharina
The trip of about 6,000 miles was completed on 4 Mar 1721 when the ship anchored at Dauphin Island. From there, the group was ferried to Nauveau Biloxi. After considerable waiting they continued on to the district set aside for the colonists which was located 40 kilometers upstream from New Orleans. The trip was by row boat across Lake Pontchartrain and Maurepas and every evening before sunset they were required to land bivouac for the night constantly harassed by the Maringouins, (mosquito's).
It is believed that his father and mother were with him when he left Germany but that his father became sick in Lorent, France while awaiting transportation and that his mother stayed with the father until his death. This occured between Nov 1720 and Apr 1721, after which she proceded to follow her children on the ship Charente. She probably died enroute to the new land aboard the La Charente which sailed about 22 Apr 1721 and was shipwrecked on the 28 Apr 1721.
In the "Family's of Louisiana" Vol II, a census listing for 1724 indicates Ambrose Hesdel (Heidel) age 22, Native of Neukirchen, Electorate of Mayence, a Roman Catholic and a Baker. His wife, his brother age 18, and cripple brother-in-law age 13 are with him. This is the last mention of this brother. On page 54, of the same book, is a listing of land owners along the Mississippi and includes Ambrose Heydel with 5 arpents bought from Gaullas and 10 arpents by possesion. The land was located between Gaspard and Villar. An arpent is approximately an acre and the normal depth was 40 arpents so the amount of land owned by Ambroise in 1724 was approximately 600 acres.
According to the "Settlement of the German Coast of Louisiana" page 25, in 1931 Ambrose and his wife had two children, one engage, three negroes and two cows.
Ambroise married Marguerite SCHOFF, daughter of Jacob SCHOFF and Marianne.
