Saco Man Given Fremont Club Cane

The Fremont club honored the oldest Franco American citizen of Biddeford and Saco Sunday, Cagetan Durette, at a double celebration at his residence, Lincoln street, Saco. Gifts presented were the unit golden cane for distinguish service to the organization
and a cake honoring his 96th birthday, which falls later this summer.

The presentation of gifts was by a group from the Fremont club including President Adrien Lamothe, Roger Wagner, Roland Menard, Edouard Neault and Frederick Thompson.

Durette came to Biddeford in 1912 and as employed here as a carpenter until retiring several years ago.

Born August 26, 1865, in the town of Bic, P.Q., in Canada, he was one of a large family
which included eight sisters and eight brothers. Still living are two of his sisters and a brother.

After his marriage, he continued to reside in Canada and was employed as a general foreman of Briss Lumber company for over 40 years. In 1912 he decided to move to Biddeford with his wife and 15 children. His wife died here in 1926.

Now residing with a daughter Amanda, he is keen, has an active memory and still plays
cards daily. He has a store of anecdotes and Franco-American history that he relishes sharing with Fremont club members and friends.

A communicant of Notre Dame de Lourdes church, Saco, he is one of the oldest living members on the rolls of the parish.

Attending the festivities Sunday were members of his immediate family, including many grandchildren, and guests from the Fremont club and auxiliary.

Cagetan Durette
Cagetan Durette, 98, died yesterday morning at his home, 23 Lincoln St., Saco.

Born in Canada, he was the son of Louis and Philomene (Thibeault) Durette, and had resided in Saco for the past 51 years. He was a carpenter by trade and was a communicant Notre Dame de Lourdes Church. In 1960, the Fremont Club presented him with a gold headed cane, as the oldest Franco-American citizen of the Biddeford-
Saco area.

Surviving are six daughters, Miss Amanda Durette, Mrs. Ernest Courtois, Mrs. Lillian Jacoby and Mrs. Berthe Fournier, all of Saco. Mrs. Juliette Quinn and Mrs. Eva Beall, Biddeford: one son, Antonio Durette. Biddeford; one sister, Mrs. Cecile Grant, Canada: several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 9 a. m. from Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, Saco. Friends may call today it the Cote Funeral Home, corner of Beach and James Streets, Saco, until 10 p. m.
