George C. Gobeil, 93, of the Inn at Atlantic Heights in Saco died peacefully on Monday, February 7, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice. He was born in Biddeford on August 6, 1917, a son of Adelard and Laura Brunelle Gobeil and was educated locally.
He proudly served in the Army in Germany and France in WWII. Prior to the war he worked as a rigger at the South Portland Shipyard building Liberty Ships. Later he was employed as a crane operator at Saco Lowell and at the Portsmouth Navy Yard where he retired in 1966.
During his retirement years, he helped his son in the maintenance of his rental properties and he especially loved to work on his son's Tree Farm in Saco. He also enjoyed traveling, playing cards, gardening and wood-working.
George was a member of St. Joseph's Church of the Good Shepherd Parish.
On April 30, 1938 he married Leda LeBlanc at St. Hyacinth Church in Westbrook.
Predeceasing him are: Leda, his wife of 40 years, on April 3, 1979; five sisters, Yvonne Binette, Alice Bedard, Laurette Charette, Jeanne d'Arc Richard and Anna Neault, and two brothers, Phillippe and Willie.
He is survived by a daughter, Marie Gloria Wright of Las Vegas, Nevada, and a son, Robert E. Gobeil of Saco; one sister, Irene DuDevoir of Saco; three brothers, Alfred, Lucien (Arthur) and his wife Carmen, and Henri and his wife Priscille, all of Biddeford; five grandchildren, Steven Wright and his wife Tamara, Sue Konesky and her husband Anthony, Julie Wright, Robin Hinkle and her husband John, Dr. Wendy St. Pierre and her husband Richard; five great-grandchildren, Amanda and Emily Wright, John (TJ) Hinkle III, Elyse and Zackery St. Pierre; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 11, 2011 at Hope Memorial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph's Church in Biddeford.
