Stephen Hallczuk - Portsmouth Naval Shipyard retiree

ARUNDEL --
Stephen Hallczuk, 72, of Clearview Drive died Friday morning at home after a long illness.

He was born in Fall River, Mass., a son of Dymtro and Matrona Hrecko Hallczuk, moved to Biddeford at an early age and attended Biddeford and Arundel schools.

Mr. Hallczuk served in the Army during World War II as a member of a Ranger batallion. He was captured and made a prisoner of war during the battle around Anzio, Italy.

On March 8, 1952, he married Pauline Nantel in Arundel.

Mr. Hallczuk was a molder for the Saco Lowell Shops for 14 years. He then worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 24 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a member of Company A of the Maine National Guard and retired after 30 years of service as a major.

Mr. Hallczuk enjoyed playing cribbage and gardening. He was a member of the St Louis Alumni and the St Jean the Baptist associations.

Surviving are his wife of Arundel; two sons, Richard of Biddeford and Raynald of Arundel; a sister, Mrs Raymond (Eva) Gagne of Biddeford; one brother, Wasyl of Arundel' five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St Mary's Church, Biddeford. Burial will be inn St Mary;s Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.
